Choosing REAL Anniversary & Giveaway!

One year ago today- December 1st- my maiden voyage of a book, Choosing REAL released into the world. While it feels like a fafillion years ago, we’re celebrating the bookaversary with a giveaway and a behind-the-scenes story.

Once upon a time there was a new author who wrote a book, sent the manuscript to her publisher, edited back and forth, co-designed a cover and awaited the day she could walk into a bookstore and find the book on a shelf. A real bookshelf.

On book release day, her sweet husband sat down at their kitchen table, a serious face set into his eyebrows, his arms crossed. I need to tell you something, he whispered. It’s about your first Amazon review.

This is where I lean forward to tell you the comical truth about Amazon reviews. They are bread and butter to authors. Publishers love them. Customers love them. Authors love the positive ones. Get ALL the amazon reviews, the book fairies cheer.

Back to serious-hubby-at-kitchen-table story.

Yes, the new author batted her eyelashes. Do share.

Your first Amazon review is horrible. It’s a 2.

And you know what that author did? She laughed. She laughed and she laughed. She laughed until her sides ached. Then she read the review, which was from a kind lady who indeed was not a Choosing REAL fan, closed her computer and let out a sigh.

This is good,  she said. This is too good.  This book isn’t my identity. Some may love it, others may hate it. It’s just a review. The only way from here is up.

And that my friends, is how this author began her writing-bookstore-Amazon-review journey. In humble pie. Reminded that every opinion matters and those opinions will be shared and have a right to be.

The magic comes in releasing words already written into the world.
The lightness comes in caring without carrying.
The beauty of authenticity comes in giving it everything you’ve got, leaving it on the shelf, and enjoying the real journey.

So cheers to the lovers and the haters and the Amazon reviewers. Cheers to the creative brave souls who put their words and hearts and stories out into the world in the form of art or blogs or teaching or parenting or books. Where are the Amazon reviews for you? You who are giving your best to what’s in front of you today?

This newold author proudly reviews you and gives a 5+ (No this isn’t possible, but I rather like the idea).
