20 ways to embrace Soul Care

The boys are settling into their school routine, soccer season is underway with the cutest Big Green Hulk, Golden Blue Dragon and Coach you ever will see, and I’m finding a life-giving rhythm of fill, pour, work, play showered with this Fall’s speaking schedule in full swing.

I called Bryan on the way home from sharing at the first venue. Talking a million miles a minute, I had the silliest grin smeared across my pink cheeks. You see, after a summer of pausing and learning and stressing then re-pausing, I GIDDILY jumped back into partnering with my kind of people and sharing all things Jesus and real. The first topic surrounded soul care, focusing on how to rest in the midst of frantic schedules, and after spending the morning with incredibly honest and authentic women, I was buzzing with FEELING SO ALIVE feelings.

I’m just so dang thankful. I LOVE that I get to come alongside churches and universities and share about how God is showing up in the crazy of life, but don’t.you.worry. I haven’t forgotten about fabulous YOU. Even if I can’t hug you in person, it’s you I imagine as I process real-time learnings and share. From one sojourner to another, enjoy these 20 practical Rest nibbles, my friend.

20 Ways to Embrace Soul Care

  1. Celebrate the definition of Rest as: Peace of mind or spirit. Moving forward, this helps us focus on rest not being something we do when alone, sleeping, or retired, but a mental and spiritual perspective of seeking peace.
  2. Say out loud, “Rest is not selfish, it is essential.”
  3. Acknowledge that rest is not something we do after we’ve worn ourselves thin, but first, so that we may live from a place of being filled with God’s peace and then give from an overflow.
  4. Read Charlotte’s Web and make “Never hurry and never worry” your new motto.
  5. Memorize Philippians 4:6-7. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the PEACE of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your HEARTS and MINDS in Christ Jesus.”
  6. Believe your value comes in who you ARE, not what you DO. When your identity is secured in a God of grace and love, everything will overflow from that inner belief.
  7. To experience His peace, we have to spend time in His presence- enjoying Him, connecting with Him. Listening and being shaped by Him. When we don’t seek God’s Spirit for our source of rest, it’s self-manufactured and at 100% risk of frantic burn-out (been there, done that x 1 billion).
  8. Do something every day that sharpens your 5 senses and encourages you to find peace in your created self. Examples: Have a dance party while making breakfast, treat yourself to a dirty chai (you’re welcome), wallpaper a wall with quotes on rest & Scripture, keep a sentimental scent in your home or desk, wear something that makes you feel beautiful.
  9. When you feel overwhelmed, ask yourself, “Am I sacrificing my sanity or family to make this happen?” Then choose confidently where to say yes and no.
  10. Instead of reacting to rush, stand back and pray about where God wants you to spend your time and with whom. Creating healthy boundaries takes us out of the center and allows God to lead.
  11. Adopt the rhythm of FILL, POUR, WORK, PLAY and repeat throughout the day.
  12. Read Maya Angelou’s quote daily: “Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers, and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.”
  13. Be present with the people you’re with.
  14. Gobble up moments of peace- in the shower, driving, instead of reaching for the phone- whatever it takes to focus your attention on enjoying Him.
  15. Listen to your body- when headaches, distracted thinking, and breakouts occur, it could be an indication that slowing down is on the agenda.
  16. Get outside for fresh air and breathe it in hungry, insatiable gulps.
  17. Tell yourself, “I need some fun.” Then chase it.
  18. Surround yourself with truth-speaking people, the kind of peeps that point you back to Jesus, toward Truth, toward peace.
  19. With your favorite color crayon, write, Enjoy the Journey and stick it to the fridge.
  20. Hold life open-handed. Peaceful people live in expectation of God’s manifestations. Celebrate every.single.one.
