Truth be Told

Tuesday nights at the Pogue Cottage are Taco Tuesdays. Please Jesus, let there be guacamole and margaritas involved. And after the kids have one more drink of water, one more kiss, one more ‘I have to go potty’ (really child, do you save it all for this moment right here?) they finally sleep. One day we’ll miss this. Or not.

And then we pull close a blue and yellow handmade quilt stitched by Grandma Harris and curl up on our couch. To pray. I may have fallen even more in life with my husband last night as he quoted Olivia Pope mid-prayer. “Stay above the fray.” Yes, babe. Preach.

Truth, we prayed for.

For whatever reason, I am needing, craving, clinging to Truth these days. Straight, from-the-Word Jesus thoughts. No pep talks or “choose joy” mantras but gentle, simple, refreshing and life-giving Truth breaths.
Breathe in. Believe Truth. Breathe out. Live from Truth. In. Out. All day long.

What I believe has everything to do with every.thing.

Truth. How easily I can mistake it in people, social media, my marriage, my job. It’s circumstantial and ever-changing.
In a world drowned with noise, text pings, static, faster, more, frantic, I wish to slice the distractions with a Truth knife.

A wise friend shared her thoughts. Truth doesn’t have to point out what something’s not. Truth focuses on what is.

And I’ve been thinking about her words for weeks. They’ve made themselves at home in my mind and I find the fact so deliciously simple. I want my life to reflect truth; not to discuss all the things I don’t want it to be. Oh, how I hope to focus on the transformation and real outcomes, not criticize corners where truth lacks.

So after praying tonight- margaritas included- cheers Lord! I’m writing these verses and framing, taping, heck! wall-papering them on my lampshade so that first thing, every morning, these Truths greets my mind and heart.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”- Romans 12:2.  A mind renewed in Truth? Yes please.

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” – Philippians 4:8. Yes! Yes! Yes! Think about these things.

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” – Isaiah 26:3. When my mind stays on You, peace births trust.

If you are in need of good ol’ Truth, I invite you to do the same. Plaster Truth where your eyes first land come dawn. Before you roll out of bed, embrace who He is, not what you aren’t. Fill yourself with Truth. Let His words settle deep down in your mind and marrow. Then watch how confidently the ever-swaying events of today draw you to the still, delicious words of our Jesus. Who celebrates Truth for what it is.

In the morning when I rise / In the morning when I rise
In the morning when I rise / Give me Jesus

Give me Jesus / Give me Jesus
You can have all this world / But give me Jesus

And when I am alone / Oh, when I am alone
And when I am alone / Give me Jesus

Give me Jesus / Give me Jesus
You can have all this world / But give me Jesus

And when I come to die / Oh, when I come to die
And when I come to die / Give me Jesus

Give me Jesus / Give me Jesus
You can have all this world / But give me Jesus

– Old Hymn
